“I’VE ONLY JESUS TO CALL MY FRIEND”

Written by B.J. Roberts/Larry Wayne Clark
Recorded by B.J. Roberts

In August 1961, fourteen months after the death of his two- and- half year old son, Gary Eugene, on Friday, May 13, 1960, in Victoria British Columbia, 23 year old Canadian Country Singer/Songwriter B.J. Roberts found himself alone and feeling friendless in a strange city.

After more than five weeks performing in Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida, and after a long night of drinking – as had been the norm for so many nights and days while on the road – in an attempt to erase the harsh memory of Gary’s demise, B.J. found himself on the precipice of a possible life ending mountain top, in his one room apartment, above a bar at 5th & Broadway in downtown Nashville Tennessee.
